The gas mask filter housing (1) has an internal screw thread (10) to receive a threaded sleeve (2) which holds the filter insert(s) (3) in place. The sleeve has a radially inward projecting flange (8) which engages a flange (5) of the filter lid (4). The sleeve can be used to retain filters of different dimensions by screwing it into the filter housing in the opposite way so that the projecting flange is at the outer end of the sleeve and can grip the flange of a filter lid of greater axial length.
