Control with a pneumatic working cylinder (2), the piston (3) of which actuates the friction clutch (1) and the working chamber of which can be connected to the surroundings either by way of an electro-pneumatic filling valve (5) with a pneumatic pressure source, or via an electro-pneumatic venting valve (4), the valves being controlled as a function of the position of a clutch operating device (12), in particular a clutch pedal. Due to pulse width modulation, the flow rates of the filling valve (5) and of the venting valve (4), which are pulse-operated, are controlled in proportion to the difference between the value of a reference value signal for the position of the piston (3) of the working cylinder (2), indicating the position of the clutch operating device (12), and the value of an actual value signal indicating the actual position of the piston (3).
