The subject matter of the invention is a lead accumulator having a housing (1) holding a plurality of cells and having a cover (3) which closes the housing (1), and in which a cavity (10) is constructed between a lower cover (3') and an upper cover (3''), arranged at a distance therefrom, for acid to be deposited. The cover (3) is provided with a degassing opening (14), having a flameproof device (15), and, if required, has filling and monitoring openings, each of which can be closed, for the cells. In order to develop the lead accumulator such that the safety with respect to degassing of the lead accumulator, with the risk of possible ignition from outside, is improved, it is proposed that in each case a plurality of cells be combined as part of the total number of cells with a common degassing opening (14), having a flameproof device, in the region of the junction of the associated cavities (10).
