Process for the preparation of 1,2,4-butanetriol by catalytic hydrogenation of malic acid esters on a copper-containing catalyst, in which the esters are led past at temperatures of 130 to 190 DEG C and hydrogen partial pressures of 100 to 300 bar on the closely arranged catalyst with extensive avoidance of the formation of a gas phase.
