METHOD FOR CHANGING GEARS IN A NON-SYNCHRONIZED JAWTRANSMISSION AND, IF APPLICABLE AUTOMATIC, ACTUATION OF THE CORRESPONDING CLUTCH

A method is described for changing a non-synchronised (jaw) shift transmission (4) fitted in a motor vehicle and, where applicable, for automatic actuation of the associated clutch (3). The shift transmission (4) has a plurality of main gears directly and mechanically engageable by the driver (6) using the gear shift lever (8) and a plurality of auxiliary gears each preselectable in conjunction with the main gear. The method of the type according to the invention is characterised in that in order to speed up the gear change an adjustment of the speed of the gears to be engaged with the gears seated on the main transmission shaft is brought about in that, once the gear to be shifted has been brought into a neutral or intermediate position with the clutch (3) kept closed a)for "changing up" the engine speed is briefly throttled by automatically controlled and regulated actuation of the engine brake and simultaneous reduction of the fuel injection quantity, whereas b) for "changing down" the engine speed is briefly increased in particular by automatically controlled and/or regulated increase of the fuel injection quantity and then - when the gears to be shifted are detected by sensors to be moving at synchronous speed - the relevant gear is brought into engagement with the gear seated on the main transmission shaft.
