PURPOSE:To provide a medicine composition having antihuman immunodeficiency virus activity, relatively weak in cytotoxicity, thus hopeful for using in the clinical therapy of AIDS, containing Merremia mammosa extract. CONSTITUTION:Tubers of Merremia mammosa (esp. Merremia mammosa Chois), a tropical plant belonging to Convolvulaceae are extracted with water pref. at the reflux temperature followed by centrifugation or filtration, etc., to effect separation of an extract from solid residue. If necessary, the extract thus obtained is concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting concentrate is lyophilized, thus providing the objective extract. The component having antihuman immunodeficiency virus activity in the present extract is insoluble in both methanol and ethanol, causing no degradation of its activity due to heat (100 deg.C, 10min) or ultraviolet treatment, but causing activity drop-off by acid or alkali treatment (pH2, room temperature, 4hr, and pH10, room temperature, 4hr, respectively). |
