PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a monomer for engineering plastics or an intermediate for perfumery, etc., in high efficiency by reacting a specific alkylbenzene compound with a carboxylic acid in the presence of a specific catalyst in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III (r and s are integers satisfying the relationships r+s=m and 1<=r<=m) can be easily produced in high selectivity using an easily producible catalyst having high selectivity and reaction activity by reacting a compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or 1-3C alkyl; R<3> is substituent having essentially no participation in acyloxylation, e.g. CH2OR<5> or OR<5>; R<5> is 2-12C acyl, 1-6C alkyl or phenyl; m and n are integers satisfying the relationships 1<=m<=6, 0<=n<=5 and 1<=m+n<=6) with a compound of formula II (R<4> is 1-11C alkyl) in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere in the presence of a catalyst component consisting of (a) a Pd component, (b) a Bi component and/or a Pb component and (c) an alkali metal carboxylate and/or a dehydration agent, especially an acid anhydride. |
