PROCESS FOR PREPARING OF PYRIDINE DERIVATED

A process for preparing 3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy pyridine-N-oxide of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting 10 g of 3,5-dimethyl-4-chloro pyridine of formula (II) with an alkali (esp. 5.8 g of NaOH) in 50 ml of methanol for 3 hrs. to obtain 3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy pyridine of formula (III), and (b) dissolving 5 g of cpd. (III) in 30 ml HAc, and reacting it with 7.1 ml of 30% H2O2 at 80-120 deg.C for 3 hrs. to oxidize the cpd. (III). The alkali is selected from NaOH or KOH. Cpd. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the prepn. of benzimidazole derivs. (esp. Omeprazole) having an antiulcer activity.
