The cationic polymerization of an epoxy compound by opening the cycle thereof is described. The method involves solubilizing a complex consisting of, on the one hand, a boron derivative having the formula B(X)3, wherein X is an anion selected from the group which includes halides and thiocyanates, and on the other, an amine, an ether or an alcohol, in a lactone which is both stable at room temperature, with regard to its homopolymerization, and copolymerizable with the initial expoxy compound.
