A process is described for the preparation of a new composition which makes it possible to confer fire propagation retarding properties onto synthetic polymer materials, which comprises precipitating a solid composition of an aqueous mixture of an oxyacid phosphate or sulphate, an amine and a surfactant, dissolving the oxyacid in a minimum volume of boiling water, adding the amine and the surfactant to the boiling water and the oxyacid, heating and stirring the boiling mixture until the solid composition precipitates completely, separating the composition from the mixture by filtration and finally grinding the composition to obtain the fire propagation retardant additive.
