PURPOSE:To facilitate detection of a Mylar(R) sheet or a paper currency which is partially contaminated with oil and the like by holding each edge part of a planar member with the outer surfaces of a side-end roller and a common roller, and detecting the width and the position of the member based on the angle of the side-end roller when the proximity signal is outputted from the corresponding proximity sensor. CONSTITUTION:When a point P holds the left edge of a sheet of paper currency 9, a roller 1 is displayed upward by the amount of the thickness. The displacement is detected with a proximity sensor 5. In other words, the output time of the proximity signal of the sensor 5 agrees with the time when the point P holds the left edge of the paper currency 9. The angular position of the roller 1, i.e. a supporting shaft 3, is detected with an angular-position sensor 13. The same action is performed at the right edge of the paper currency 9. Therefore, the proximity signals of the proximity sensors 5 and 6 and the signals from the angular-position sensors 13 and 14 are sent into an operating part 10 where operation is performed. Thus, the width and the position of the paper currency 9 can be obtained. |
