1,2,3,4,6,7,8,8a- Octahydro-5,7,7,8a- tetramethyl-naphthalene derivs. of formula (I) are new. In (I) Z = CO or CHOCOX; (where X = H or Me). USE - (I) are fragrances with woody, violet, damascone and/or amber aroma notes, useful in perfumes and perfumed prods.. In an example, a mixt. of 1.3 g 1,3,5,5- tetramethyl-2-(3-butenyl)-2- cyclohexen-1-ol and 100 ml HCOOH was stirred at 20 deg C for 2.5 hr and worked up to give 1.5 g (63.5%) of 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,8a -octahydro- 5,7,7,8a(beta-tetramethyl-2 (alpha)-naphthyl formate.
