MEASUREMENT OF FLATNESS OF STRIP MATERIAL

To determine the flatness of metal strip moving in the direction of its length, coherent laminar flow columns of liquid are caused to impinge on a surface of the metal strip at regions spaced apart in the direction of the width of the strip. Ultrasonic signals are transmitted down the columns of liquid and reflected signals pass back along the columns. The time delay between transmission and receipt of the reflected signals represents the length of the liquid columns and, hence, the flatness of the surface of the strip.
