An automated multi-level storage facility (10) comprises a modular construction of beams (15), posts (14) and turns (13) which carry identical storage carriages (11) configured as an endless train. The beams (15) and turns (13) comprise opposed spaced parallel channels providing tracks along which the carriages travel a serpentine path where a single carriage at a time travels around a turn (13) thereby balancing operational stresses and reducing retrieval times. The storage facility is driven by synchronised drives which are distributed through the storage facility to uniformly distribute operational stress. The facility is under computer control and can be made in a grid pattern with concrete walls and floors between levels as a combined storage facility and building foundation with improved load distribution. Alternative drives, carriages and framework structures are described. |
