Compsn. for improving the feeding of preruminant animals comprises sorbitol (I) either as powder or soln., or as the major component of hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, opt. fixed onto a support together with other components of the hydrolysate. The (I) used meets the purity criteria 420 I and II of the EEC Council for emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickeners and gelling agents to be used in foods (directive 78/663/CEE of 25.7.78). Pref. sufficient (I) is added to the feed to provide 3-20, esp. about 10, g per day; esp. the final ration contains 0.1-2, esp. 0.3% (I). The compsn. improves secretion of bile (and hence digestion of lipids), partic. in calves, without disturbing the closure of the 'oesophagal gutter' which short-circuits the rumen. Animals receiving (I) gain wt. more quickly, and have better index of feed consumption. |
