<p>A composite fastener (60) which provides up to 480 MPa in shear strength in a 1/4 inch shank diameter and includes several layers (20) having long parallel carbon fibers (23) embedded in resin. The layers (20) are pressed together and heated to form a panel (10). The panel (10) is cut into bars (12) which are then machined into rods (40), used to form threaded or unthreaded composite shear pins. The fibers (23) in adjacent layers (20) are angled with respect to another to provide maximum shear strength in a particular direction. The head (70) of the shear pin (60) is preferably marked (71) to indicate the orientation of maximum shear strength.</p> |
