An ultrasound probe for detecting defective fuel rods in a boiling water nuclear reactor fuel element, includes a rotationally symmetric probe body which carries at least a pair of ultrasound test heads. The body of the unit can be fed into the bottom of the element so that it enters the space between four fuel rods. The body has a hyperbolic section which runs axially, which runs into upper and lower cylindrical sections. The probe heads are located in the hyperbolic region. The upper cylindrical section incorporates spring spheres which extend from its mantle surface. ADVANTAGE - The probe is simple to locate and can be reliably positioned.
