A metal bellows for use in a mechanical seal is rolled from a flat sheet (10) "INCONEL" 625 for example. It is seam welded along an axial diagonal line (12) and its corrugations or convolutions (15, 16) have inner and outer crowns (20A, 20B) of identical radii. The end corrugation or convolution at each end of the bellows (20) is axially compressed to provide an annular double-thickness bearing and support surface (14) against which an end ring (21, 22) is located in face-to-face connection, the bellows ends and the end rings being welded together at the outer diameter of the end rings (21, 22). An axially short and mechanically strong bellows results from this construction. |
