An arrangement for optical detection of foreign bodies or a coating on the surface of an optically transparent plate (15) contains at least one light source (12) and at least one light receiver (13). The source and receiver are arranged on one side of an optical window (18) on a carrier (14) with an optically transparent material (21) on the other side. The transparent material is mounted in a holder (20) attached to the carrier. A vacuum is formed in the vol. (26) bounded by the holder in the attached state or during assembly. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables relatively secure attachment to plate and measurement errors are eliminated. Suitable for all panes and lamp lens esp. an motor vehicle, i.e. windscreen, rear window, head lamps, rear and signalling lamps. Keeps clean and can monitor , e.g. when rain falls on windscreen to activate wipers.
