A slide calliper gauge for large articles, esp. tree trunks or cattle in abattoirs, has, on the stationary part, magnetic markings. The sliding part is fitted with a sensor to respond to the latter and with a minicomputer which receive its signals. The stationary part is a hollow bare made of carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin and the inserts for the running surfaces are made of ground nonferrous metal. Solid carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin is used for the jaws, the guide and the front plate of the sliding part.
