The spindle unit of a drilling/milling machine, partic. one for machining sheets of wood, plastics or composite materials, has a housing with at least two spindles for drills and/or milling cutters and moved up/down by a piston/cylinder unit. Each such spindle has a front bearing on the tool side and a rear bearing at the end carrying the piston/cylinder unit; the machine has a drive with gear wheel for each spindle which passes through a centre bore in it; each spindle can move through a set distance in the central bore and is coupled to the gear wheel in a manner which transmits torque. Where it moves each spindle is cylindrical; each has a clamp roller free wheel in the centre bore to couple torque between spindle and gear wheel. ADVANTAGE - The spindle unit design is simple to produce and occupies less height than existing designs.
