The heating device uses a large area non-conductive substrate (1), evenly coated with a metal coating (2) of precise depth, contacted by an electrode terminal (3) at two opposite sides, the whole being enclosed by an air-tight encapsulation. The metal coating comprises a mixture of crystals of a conductive material, e.g. graphite, and a non-conductive material, with small pore spaces between them acting as micro-spark gaps upon application of a voltage across the electrode terminals.
