PURPOSE:To improve the detection sensitivity, detection accuracy, and resolution and to realize low prices, size reduction, and high efficiency by using the X-ray optical fiber with which an X-ray fluorescent material is mixed for a core, and utilizing it for the detection of X rays. CONSTITUTION:The X-ray fluorescent material 9 is mixed in the core 7 of an optical fiber to constitute the X-ray fluorescent optical fiber. Incident light 5a from the end face and incident light 5b from the side face are mad incident on this fiber. Then the clad 8 is covered with a shield film 12 made of a material which X rays do not penetrate t make the X rays incident on the end face, or the end surface is provided with a shield film 13 and a window hole 14 is bored in the shield film 12 on the side face to make only either of the incident light beams 5a and 5b incident. Consequently, when the X rays are made incident to strike on the fluorescent material 9 in the core 7, visible fluorescent light 11 is emitted, and reflected and propagated in the core 7. This generated light is confined to the core 7 and transmitted in a detection direction, but diffused laterally so that the X rays can be detected with good efficiency. |
