PURPOSE:To improve the speed change response property of an automatic transmission by composing the system to release the delay of the speed change decision when the speed change is decided in the area where the speed change lines are not lapped in a shift pattern diagram. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 100 carries out the speed change control and the lockup control in an automatic transmission depending on detection signals from the detectors. The shift pattern diagram to carry out the speed change control and the lockup control is stored being mapped in a built-in memory in the control unit 100. And the control unit 100 furnishes a speed change decision delay releasing means to release the speed change decision by a speed change condition deciding means in the area where different speed change lines are not lapped in a shift pattern diagram, and the system is composed to carry out the speed change by deciding the speed change condition instantly when a speed change signal is generated.
