The insertion instrument according to a first embodiment of the invention comprises a means (2) forming a pusher mounted slideably in a means forming a guide (1) for inserting the intra-uterine device (3) into the uterine cavity (50), and is characterised in that the said means forming a guide (1) consists of an elongate manipulating body (4) comprising a through passage (6) and a hollow tube forming an insertion cannula (8) for the insertion into the uterine cavity (50) of the said intra-uterine device (3), integral with the said manipulating body and extending in the continuation of the said body. The invention makes it possible to check the position of the cannula in the uterine cavity and the correct positioning of the intra-uterine device in particular.
