A water-absorptive polyester fiber is produced by (a) ester- exchange reacting 97.1 g dimethyl terephthalate, 64.2 g glycol, 3 g sodium-3,5-dicarbomethoxy benzenesulfonate with 0.06 g sodium acetate, (b) polycondensing the reactant, 0.3 g calcium acetate and 0.8 g triethyl phosphorothioate with 0.04 g antimony trioxide, (c) spinning the copolymer to obtain a hollow fiber, and (d) treating the hollow fiber with an alkali solution. The polyester fiber is used as a medical and industrial fiber.
