摘要 PURPOSE:To change a waveguide direction with a simple structure so that light powers can be separated by utilizing the tapered part of a 2nd optical waveguide layer to make mode conversion. CONSTITUTION:The optical waveguide layer 2 is formed on a transparent substrate 1 and further the optical waveguide layer 3 which is diagonally formed with a boundary to the guided light A passing the optical waveguide layer 2 and has a gentle taper shape C on the end face is formed thereon. The refractive indices of the transparent substrate 1, the optical waveguide layer 2 and the optical waveguide layer 3, designated respectively as n1, n2, n3, are required to satisfy n1<n2<3. The part of the optical waveguide layer 2 is determined as a region (I) and the part where the optical waveguide layer 3 is formed thereon is determined as a region (II). The light powers are converted to plural modes and separated by the mode conversion utilizing this tapered part. The influence on the microchange of the shape is lessened in this way and the easy and wide adjustment of the distribution ratio of the light by the angle of the taper and a difference in the refractive index between the two layers is possible.
