A jack for lifting a motor vehicle has a leg (1) which forms a guide for a sliding arm (2). The arm fits under the vehicle bodywork and is raised by means of a screwed spindle which is driven from a rotating handle (4). A foot (7) extends horizontally from the lower end of the leg. This foot has a rib formed by a round bar (12) welded to its under surface. This rib engages holes in the side flanges of a base plate (3) and rests on the upper surface of this base plate (3) to form a pivot of the leg (1) and foot (7).
