Substance (I) contg. polyperylene units of formula (II) is claimed; (I) is obtd. by oxidn. of the corresp. bis-naphthalene-dioic acid imidazolide of formula (III); Ar = aromatic residue; n = above 1. Also claimed are: (a) cpds. (III) as such, (b) prodn. of (I) by oxidn. of (III) in a fluid bed, electrochemically or with (in)organic oxidising agent with oxidn. potential above +0.5 V, and (c) prodn. of (III) by reaction of naphthalene-1,8-dioic acid anhydride (IV) with the corresp. aromatic tetra-amine (V). USE/ADVANTAGE - Prodn. of polymers (I) from soluble starting materials (contrast prior-art processes). (I) are insol. polymers, useful e.g. as pigments, materials for sensors, electrodes, energy storage, etc.
