The gripper for opening sacks with valves in them has opening-pieces (3,3',4,5) which move along two axes of movement, one of which runs longitudinally along the closed sack-valve (12) through two distant points, and the other axis is at right angles to that. The intersection of the two axes of movement is in the centre of the valve (12). The opening-pieces on the lengthwise axis are a pair of pick-up pieces (3,3'). The opening-pieces on the transverse axis are a clamp (4) and a suction-piece (5). All the opening-pieces (3,3',4,5) cooperate with a coupling (6). USE/ADVANTAGE - Different sizes of sack can be dealt with and various widths of valve, with only one pick up piece.
