The prepn. of crystalline highly pure Na methanoate (I) comprises reacting CO with aq. NaOH, crystallising out the (I) formed, treating it with methanoic acid and drying. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be used in pharmacy, medicine, chemistry, tanning, galvanic baths, fixing baths etc. where it is required in high purity. The process gives highly pure (I) with better flowing properties and a reduced tendency to cake without the need to add other substances such as surfactants. The resulting (I) can be used further without the need to employ heavy aids such as mills, crushers etc. It can be conveyed pneumatically and dosed out in exact amts. stored and used without any difficulty by automated machinery.
