A charging system feeds starting material into the melting area in a melting chamber of a furnace producing strand cast ingots in a protective gas atmosphere. At least two moulds are incorporated in a disc sealed into the chamber floor, rotating about a vertical axis. Electron beam guns in the roof of the chamber are directed onto the melting area and one or other mould as required. A tundish in the melting area directs molten metal towards the mould in the casting position. Vacuum valves below the moulds couple them to strand removal gear in removal chambers.
