The press for manufacturing blanks from powder or granular material comprises a main rod (20) carrying an upper die (24), a main mechanical drive (50) for the main rod (20), a draw-off rod (30) carrying a lower die (46), a first auxiliary drive (64) driven from the main drive for moving the draw off rod from the filling position to a pressing position and a second auxiliary drive (86) for the reverse movement of the draw off rod (30). At least one and preferably both of the auxiliary drives (64; 86) are fluid pressure cylinder units with cylinder parts which can be set to limit the stroke.
