The characteristic frequency of the winding is measured before determining the resistance, coefficient of self-inductance, and capacitance for each turn. The isolation relative to earth, and the capacitance relative to earth are also measured. The winding is then connected to a variable high tension pulse generator and the damping of the resulting waves detected. From these values and an observed critical damping, the isolation resistance between the turns of the winding may be determined.
