The electric throttle, for an automobile engine, has a required setting signal source (2) coupled to the accelerator pedal (1) and an electronic regulator (3) with further inputs representing the engine revs and the temp. etc. to provide the required adjustment of the throttle and the fuel injection pump. Safety contacts (8,9) are respectively associated with the required setting signal source and the setting mechanism (4) controlled by the regulator. The idling revs can be increased by the regulator at low running temp. or when auxiliary loads are switched in, by closure of the safety contact across the required setting signal source, until a required threshold revs are reached. When the required setting signal fails the setting mechanism is moved into a position in which its safety contact remains closed.
