Rolling shutter with plastic slats - rolls up transparent slats through wide entry slit in housing and on to its shaft which is fitted with sleeves to increase its radius

A rolling shutter to protect glass has parallel moving bars of transparent material, pref. of plastics such as acrylic, wound round a shaft inside a housing. This shaft has at least two separate coaxial parts of greater but equal o.d. so as to have increased radius, and at least one of its bars/slats is attached there at the shaft end. More specifically the shutter consists of the slats (12) which are attached to each other but so that they can move relative to each other to a certain extent. They are held on to the shaft (14) on which they can be rolled up. The shaft is inside the housing (16) which has a slit (20) of width to accomodate the slats and running parallel to the shaft. The shaft (14) has sleeves (26) fitted on as two halves for ease of application and these halves are glued together and to the shaft. Strips (28) connect the slats system (10) to the shaft sleeves (26). Rollers (30) guide the slats through the slit (20). ADVANTAGE - Although the construction uses plastic bars/slats it is easily rolled up or unrolled. Their surfaces suffer little or no effect from their movements; this is particularly important where the slats have coatings to reflect or impede light.
