PURPOSE:To decrease the thickness of a refractory covering layer applied to steel frame, etc., and to reduce the weight, labor and time for application, etc., by compounding an inorganic binder and an unexpanded thermally expandable mineral powder to a water-based pasty covering material. CONSTITUTION:The objective refractory covering material is composed of a water-based paste containing an inorganic binder and an unexpanded thermally expandable mineral powder. The refractory covering layer is expanded by the heat in fire hazard by the presence of the unexpanded mineral powder to increase the thickness of the layer, improve the refractory performance of the refractory covering layer and exhibit excellent action to improve the heat-insulation and fire-resistant properties. Since the unexpanded mineral powder is e.g. vermiculite having unexpanded layer distance or unfoamed perlite, there is no problem of the intrusion of water into the mineral powder in the forced feeding with a pump in contrast to a conventional water-based paste produced by using expanded vermiculite. Accordingly, the lowering of fluidity can be prevented to unnecessitate the addition of excess water. |
