PURPOSE:To readily control reaction temperature and to produce methanol efficiently and advantageously in obtaining methanol from carbon dioxide and hydrogen, by using a catalyst comprising copper, zinc or an oxide thereof and carrying out the reaction in an inert solvent. CONSTITUTION:In reacting carbon dioxide substantially not containing carbon monoxide with hydrogen, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of a metal comprising copper and zinc or an oxide thereof in an inert solvent especially at 100-400 deg.C reaction temperature under 20-350kg/cm<2> reaction pressure to give methanol. By this method, temperature of reaction is readily controlled, a reaction condition advantageous with respect to equilib rium can be maintained and methanol is efficiently produced. This process is an extremely useful process in terms of industry in conversion of carbon dioxide and also in production of methanol as a clean energy source. |
