PURPOSE:To obtain the title polyarylene sulfide by reaction between an alkali metal sulfide and a dihaloaromatic compound in an organic amide solution through each specified two steps. CONSTITUTION:Firstly, a reaction is made in an organic amide solvent at 180-250 deg.C between (A) an alkali metal sulfide and (B) a dihaloaromatic compound in the presence of such amount of water as to be 0.5-2.5mols per mol of the component A into a polyarylene sulfide 5-800 poises in melt viscosity with the conversion of the component B at >=50mol%. Thence, the reaction is continued by raising the reaction temperature to 250-290 deg.C along with adding a poor solvent for the polyarylene sulfide to the system so that the poor solvent account for 30-60wt.% of the total solvent, thus providing the objective high- molecular weight polyarylene sulfide >=1000 poises in melt viscosity. |
