Hypodermic needle is protected by a sleeve enclosing it and lockable to it clear of the free end. A second sleeve slides over the needle in the lengthwise direction, and is joined to the first by a spring. The latter thrusts it in the direction of the free end, so in the extended position the free end is inside the second sleeve. Resilient plastic can be used for the spring.
