Process and composition for the industrial treatment of hides and application of amphoteric imidazoline derivatives to this treatment. The process comprises a stage of preparation in which the hide being treated is brought to a pH of 3.5-7 and a stage which includes treating the hide in an aqueous bath containing at least one amphoteric imidazoline derivative having the general formula I, which is defined in the description. The composition comprises a solution of the said amphoteric derivative which may contain other coadjuvants and/or agents. <IMAGE>
