A lubricant composition containing hydroxyalkane phosphonic acids and their derivatives. Comprises: an oil of lubricating viscosity and a composition prepared from salts of compound of formula I in which R is alkyl and Y is hydrogen or a phosphonic acid group, and a base selected from A a detergent, B a dispersant selected from Mannich dispersants, dispersants of the succinimide type, dispersants of the ester type containing nitrogen and viscosity improvers having dispersant properties, and C an amine which has a substituent with a minimum of 8 carbon atoms. This has application in improving the antiwear and extreme pressure properties of lubricant formulations such as grease, lubricants for diesel engines, lubricants for gasoline engines, transmission fluids and various gear lubrication formulations.
