The invention relates to a method for applying a covering for walls and ceilings using webs which are placed in such a way that they line the surface to be covered, and to the covering obtained by carrying out the said method. The method according to the invention consists in: a) stretching support wires (1), which are parallel to each other, opposite the surface to be covered (2); b) stretching a first roll of covering webs (5) parallel to the support wires (1) and side by side in such a way as to line the complete surface to be covered, the support wires thus being placed between the said covering and the said surface; c) stretching a second roll of covering webs (6) perpendicular to the support wires (1) and side by side in such a way as to line, in the direction perpendicular to the above direction, the complete surface to be covered (2), each web being placed in such a way as to pass, in the manner of a chequered weaving, once over and once under the successive webs (5) which are perpendicular to it. <IMAGE>
