PRODUCTION OF SILICON CARBIDE SINTERED BODY

PURPOSE:To obtain the SiC sintered body of intricate shape with the die molding using a uniaxial press at ordinary temp. by granulating an SiC powder added with the sintering and molding assistants, press-forming the granulated powder with the surface impregnated with oil while fluidizing the powder and sintering the formed body. CONSTITUTION:Specified amts. of the B as the sintering assistant, phenolic resin as the C source and polyethylene glycol as the forming assistant are mixed into an alpha-SiC powder in the mixing stage 1. The mixture is dried in the drying stage 2 by a spray dryer to obtain the granulated powder. The surface of the dried and granulated powder is impregnated with oil in the impregnation stage 3 to obtain the treated powder. The treated powder is placed on a lower punch 6 in the molding stage 4, and the powder is enclosed by a die 7 and uniaxially pressed by an upper punch 8 at ordinary temp. to obtain a molded body 9. The molded body 9 is sintered at 2100-2200 deg.C in the sintering stage 5 to obtain an SiC sintered body 10 shown in the figure.
