PURPOSE:To high-precisely polish a workpiece into a desired ball size and sphericity by supporting an upper lapping machine having a protruding spherical surface through a resilient shaft. CONSTITUTION:Since an upper lapping machine 2 having a protruding spherical surface 10 is supported through a resilient shaft 7, a workpiece W held in a holding groove 13 of a lower lapping machine 1 is pressed between the nip formed by the upper and lower lapping machines 2 and 1 to machine a spherical body. In this case, even when there is unevenness in a ball size between the workpieces W, the upper lapping machine 2 is inclined such that an approximately uniform polishing pressure is applied on the workpiece W through the resilient shaft 7. Thus, the workpiece W can be high-precisely polished into a desired ball size and sphericity without stopping rolling and damaging the holding groove 13 due to unevenness in a load. |
