PURPOSE:To surely produce the optical branching device or optical coupling device having desired characteristics by once producing a directional coupler constituting the optical branching device or optical coupling device, then working the substrate within the coupling section thereof, and thereby adjusting the characteristics. CONSTITUTION:The directional coupler including a pair of optical waveguides 4a and 4b is first produced and a mask 5 blanked out only in the substrate part between the optical waveguides 4a and 4b in the coupling part is formed thereon over the entire part on the substrate 1. A light emitting means 6 and light power measuring means 7a, 7b are connected as the means for measuring the characteristics of this coupling part to the optical waveguides 4a and 4b. The crosstalks of the optical waveguides 4a and 4b with each other in the coupling part are monitored by the measuring means and while the substrate 1 is irradiated with a laser beam from an upper laser device 8, the laser device 8 is moved and the substrate of the irradiated region is removed. The mask 5 is removed when the coupling part having the desired characteristics is obtd. The optical coupling device or optical branching device formed with such removing part 9 which attains the desired characteristics is obtd. |
