A high-speed radial tyre for a heavy load comprising a carcass made of organic fibres, a bracing layer (10) made of organic fibres, a cap layer (14) composed of at least one ply which has additional cording (27), positioned between the carcass and the bracing layer, between the additional cording of the ply of the cap layer and the cording of the ply adjacent to this ply of the cap layer being interposed a protective layer of rubber (20) having a thickness of 1/4 times to 4 times the diameter of the said additional cording, and the protective layer of rubber extending at least toward the outside in the axial direction of the tyre of the ply of the said cap layer. The tyre is capable of improving holding in bends whilst increasing the stiffness to tangential flexion at the surface of the tread strip, and of improving the structural durability of the tread strip. <IMAGE>
