The workpiece transport arrangement has a track drive system for transport carriages passing working positions. The carriages have their own motors and a lateral loading and unloading mechanism which can be motor driven. The feed elements (38) of the loading mechanism (38-52) which engage the transported material are integral part of a module (34) in the form of an automatically operated unit contg. the loading surface and removably attached to a carriage (18) base frame (32). USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables relatively low cost conversion from standard configuration with only loading surface to one with loading and unloading mechanism.
