The compactor comprises a housing having a support frame. A compacting chamber within receives a disposable self supporting garbage container. A loading mechanism is provided for directing rubbish into the container. An extendible ram drive is supported at one end of the support frame in the upper portion of the chamber for compacting the garbage. A power controller is provided to terminate extension of the ram when the compacting pressure exceeds a preset value. A displacement device is actuated upon retraction of the ram drive to effect relative movement between the rubbish container and one of the chamber containment walls to loosen frictional engagement and thus allow easy removal of the garbage from the compacting chamber.
