A process for decomposing polyhalogenated cycloalkyl cpds. (I) with 4 8 C and polyhalogenated aromatic cpds. (II) with at least 5 C by heating in the presence of a catalyst, comprises (a) heating a solid or liq. substrate contaminated with the (I) or (II), or the (I) or (II) itself, in intimate contact with the catalyst or (b) converting the volatile components present in a solid substrate contaminated with the (I) or (II), or a liq. substrate contaminated with the (I) or (II), or the (I) or (II) itself into the gaseous state by heating or combustion and heating the resulting gases or a gaseous substrate contaminated with the (I) and (II) in intimate contact with the catalyst; the catalyst comprising ash or a metal of gp. Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IVa, IVb, VIb, VIIb or VIIIb of the periodic system or an oxide or salt of these or a mixt.; or (c) heating the fly ash from refuse- and waste burning units which is contaminated with (I) or (II) directly in a non-through-flow system under oxygen-deficient conditions; in each case the operating temp. being 150 800 (300-500) deg.C.
